CAIRO'S LIVING PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

1 / 4

The design creates multiple cascading stepped plazas, branching down from the main bridge path, where people can dwell and get closer to The Nile. Such simple gesture allows for increased public space without becoming visually imposing or dominant over the Nile, maintain the river’s continuity. It also allows for the creation of enclosed spaces to house the proposed program, without the need for skyline clutter. The mid-section of the bridge offers both the highest and lowest point along the bridge body. At the highest point, people can observe and view, while at the lowest point, the get to experience and be as close they can get, surrounded by The Nile from all sides. Another instance of trying to resolve dichotomies. The Journey starts at whatever end of the bridge, where

a public space is always present. A grand stair access receives pedestrians and cyclists, equipped with an elevator for handicapped access. The main bridge slope allows for a universal access at its top, while access to below happens through steps or elevators. Once on top of it, one can sit leisurely in front of a view or lie on one’s back and enjoy the weather, be part of the urban terrace audience that attends public events in he eastern public plaza from above or the elevated gardens where everything is quiet. One can be up enjoying open views or down experiencing the Nile closely, sheltered indoors or interacting outdoors. The underside of the bridge in our proposal enlivens this space by turning the Nile into a framed picture to the indoor areas and the 360 platform.
